Pop Your Collar: San Francisco Ranks First for Preppiest Cities

Posted By on Fri, Sep 13, 2013 at 12:54 PM

Riddle me this: When was the last time you saw someone in San Francisco wearing a pink polo shirt (collar up!), khaki pants held tight by a black leather woven belt and Lacoste penny loafers?

That's what we thought.

Cable-knit vests and all things J. Crew somehow don't register as typical San Francisco, unless they're mixed and matched with over-sized moth-eaten sweaters, discolored skinny jeans and an air of irony. Beanies and hoodies just don't scream polo match.

The folks at Motovo Real Estate don't seem to agree with our observations and rank San Francisco as the preppiest city in the United States, edging out such Oxford-wearing heavyweights like Boston and Scottsdale, AZ.

Wait. Rewind. Did they really rank Scottsdale, AZ number two and Honolulu, HI number three? Forgive the ignorance, but Lilo & Stitch isn't quite The Social Network as far as prep is concerned.

It's time for some clarity. Motovo considered the following when compiling their list:

  • Number of preppy clothing retailers per capita
  • Country clubs per capita
  • Equestrian centers per capita
  • Private schools per capita
  • Presence of boarding/preparatory schools
  • Percentage of college graduates with a bachelor's degree or higher
  • Median household income

It all makes a little more sense now. San Francisco is renowned for private school education and many residents do prefer the sockless Tommy Hillfiger-style.

We feel though for our brothers and sisters in Boston -- the only New England city to make the list. We're all too familiar with the sting of not coming in first.

Somewhere in San Francisco, the Lacoste crocodile grins.

The full list of the U.S.'s preppiest cities are on the Movoto site.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
