Adultery and Its Problems!

Author: Mrs. M. A. Daoud

Date: None given; presumably the late 1950s

Publisher: M. A. Daoud, Dallas, Texas

Discovered at: Antique Center, Oakland

The Cover Promises: The musical theater hit of 1968: Adultery and its Problems!

Representative Quote:

"Though both the man and woman that commit adultery are both guilty, for the deed could not be committed without the consent of both, yet the scriptures plainly show that women are more responsible to lead men astray ... and that only men without any sense or understanding will be trapped by such women."

The story goes that God one day pinged evangelist M.A. Doaud and, after some what's up?s and such, told him to start a grubby little magazine and send it overseas to convert people. Always a delegator in terms of management philosophy, God then moved on to other things, certain that personally contacting one white American was the most efficient possible way to win over the souls of the unsaved millions in India. Doaud got to it, founding the free monthly Miracles and Missions Digest in 1956, sending bibles and missionaries overseas, and cranking out books with titles like Freedom From Demons and Sickness: Is It from God or the Devil? (Guess. Just guess.) The kind of message Doaud spread around the world, taken from page 34 of Adultery and Its Problems: "A man can make a beautiful woman ugly by being untrue to her ... and he can make his ugly wife beautiful by being kind to her!" Here's a sampling of other Daoud books:

(Note the fun extra apostrophe on "By The Daoud's.") Today, the Daouds' ministry carries on both its mission and its disinterest in quality control, as you can see in this photo from its website, where the Daouds' own name is mis-spelled.
The "brother and sister" above are also husband and wife. Sister/wife -- usually identified in Miracles and Missions publications as "Mrs. M.A. Daoud" -- on occasion wrote her own books, including Adultery and Its Problems!, which is all vicious brain-rot about how you or your mother or your sister is a whore:

And it goes on like that. Not so much written as it was hocked up and spat, Adultery and its Problems advances an argument familiar from that dumb thing all America was yelling about a couple weeks weeks back: That women ("whores") are after sex and money, and that this is a very bad thing for the men who are always being tricked into bed with them. Mrs. M.A. Daoud's own life shows the choice that women should have: Either have whore-sex outside of wedlock or give up your name and marry some guy you call "brother." What follows is a selection of the most alarming of Mrs. M. A Daoud's caps-locked thoughts about why adultery is bad. Even that conviction -- one that most people might agree with -- becomes controversial, here: Daoud considers adulterous any affair or marriage between anyone who has ever been married or "fornicated" previously. As she puts it, "The time to stop adultery is NEVER TO LET YOUR CHILD START GOING WITH A DIVORCED OR MARRIED PERSON!" Instead of typing, Mrs. Daoud paddles the naughty keys. Anyway, here's a potpourri of Mrs. Daoud's musings. (All ellipses are from the original.) On "whore"s:
"'Whore' means any woman that wants un-lawful sex relations, usually for financial support and Prestige."
On step-children:
"A murderer can repent, but that does not bring back the life that he killed. An adultress and adulterer can repent, but that does not put back those children that have been born in sin, out of this world."
On how the difference between God and family court is not just that God feels no need to put the Ten Commandments on the wall:
"When a man breaks his marriage vows and lives with every woman he chooses, it so grieves God's heart, He is SORRY THAT MAN OR WOMAN EVER CAME ON THIS EARTH TO DEFILE IT! Courts may give divorces, but NOT GOD!"
On the failure of the church to teach how to pray away your VD:
"The PULPITS ARE SILENT ON THE AWFUL JUDGMENTS OF GOD ON ADULTERY while MILLIONS of people are being ruined with terrible diseases from which there is NO CURE until genuine repentance makes the offender turn away from his wicked ways and live!"
On the failure of the prosperity gospel to prevent parents from catching their children's VD:
"If parents would be good at the job GOD gave them, instead of some where [sic] to make more money so little daughter could dress up more fancy, and son could have a new car, and would firmly insist that no divorcee would take their child's attention ... you would save your own body as well as your children's bodies from loathsome sicknesses!"
On parenting ... but also accidentally on why the generation after the Daouds rebelled:
"For unruly daughters and unruly sons, the Scripture still expects you to do more than go to sleep and say: 'I've done the best I could ... I go to church, but I don't know why my children are un-saved!' ... God expects you dear mother and dad to take a rod to the backs of your sons and daughters 'to save their souls from hell!'"
Enough! The good news, I guess, is that accusations of whoredom and calls for child-beating are no longer common in American religious life. In fact, to win the domestic souls who came to feel alienated by bitter spewings like those above, evangelizers learned to sell their don't-have-sex message with a whole lot more sugar, as you can see on history's greatest book cover:

You're not a wretched sinner! No, you're this close to inspiring awe, like the pyramids or something! --

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
