It's the time of year when Hollywood shines the spotlight on itself, and the
Balboa and the
Roxie theaters bring the red carpet to San Francisco on Sunday evening by showing the Academy Awards telecast on the big screen. Writer and performer Reed Kirk Rahlmann returns to the Balboa this year as master of ceremonies, offering entertainment during commercial breaks in the program. We imagine a lot of the night's entertainment will come from the Balboa's guests, who are encouraged to dress up as their favorite nominated movie or star. (Organizers tell us that literal translation and bad puns are fair game.) Several prizes are up for grabs, and the person who can correctly guess the most Oscar winners gets a season pass to the theater.
Meanwhile, across town in the Mission, the Roxie plans its own Oscar-iffic get-together.
