The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence lived up to the extravagance of their name last weekend at the third annual Project Nunway, a decadent fashion show thrown to raise money for the order's community outreach projects. Local designers teamed up with sisters to design their 2012-inspired ensembles, crafted from recycled materials. The nuns strutted in two runway shows, punctuated by an endearing rendition of "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by transgender performer Cassandra Cass.
As a lover of all things "end times," I was smitten with the show. Click through to check out some of the most outstanding looks of the apocalyptic evening.
Sister Pat N' Leather co-hosted the evening with drag performer Monistat, and she upstaged some of the runway looks with her own handcrafted ensembles. This death metal witch-princess getup was my favorite of her outfits; it's easy to imagine her as the ringmaster of the 2012 circus.
The thing I find most impressive about this? This sister was an audience member, not a participant in the runway show. From glowing beard and feather headdress to fringed boots and bling, this sister looks stunning. Imagine how much more fabulous your life would be if you dressed this well every time you went out on the town.
A collaboration between local artist Danyol Leon and Evan Kaminsky for House of Jazz Hands, this design blew me away. They completely transformed the traditional habit. I imagine this sister frozen in time for looking back at the city of Sodom, just like Lot's wife in the Bible. Thanks for disobeying the angel of deliverance, Sister Tuna Noodle Cocktail. You look fabulous.
This design, by Ed Moose Maravilla, is just plain crazy. It's like Voldemort joined a hippie commune and took a basket-weaving class while still maintaining an active wizardry career. The intricacy of the garment is gorgeous, and the neutral colors are such a departure from typical drag.
The tragic thing about this look is that no photograph could capture how absolutely gigantic it was. I'm horrible at estimating, but I'll take a stab at it and say the wingspan of this angel must have been at least 12 feet. Designed by Sister Pat N' Leather, it made a perfect complement to her own dark angel attire.
