This Weekend Remember 9/11 -- But Don't Forget the Security State

In 1791 Jeremy Bentham published plans for what he called the Panopticon. Meant to be applied to prison design, it has rooms arranged in a circle around a central control booth. Bentham reasoned that if inmates knew they were being watched at all times, they would be more likely to follow the rules. A similar philosophy fuels the contemporary proliferation of security cameras. They're meant to stop crime, but some argue they're an unacceptable infringement on our right to be left alone. The group art show Saturday at "Keeping an Eye on Surveillance" at the the Performance Art Institute tackles these issues, particularly whether security measures really do make us more secure.

Artists Rodney Ewing (whose Intimate Peril is shown above), Taraneh Hemami, and Enrique Chagoya have long infused their work with cultural politics, and multimedia mastermind Jim Campbell uses LED and other technologies to depict shadowy figures who may or may not know they're being tracked by a camera. Farley Gwazda contributes a sound installation called it's going to take us forever to get home. Michael Zheng and Nigel Poor do performance pieces.

After seeing this exhibit, everyday software like Google Street View might not ever look the same.

The opening reception for "Keeping an Eye on Surveillance" starts at 6 p.m. (and the exhibit continues through Oct. 22) at the Performance Art Institute, 575 Sutter (at Mason), S.F. Admission is free.

    Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
