Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'.
Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"

So it was heartening to hear of celebratory events related to the continuance, rather than demise, of a favorite city institution. Specs' Twelve Adler Museum, one point of the Columbus Avenue triangle of historic bars including Tosca's and Vesuvio, enjoyed two rounds of festivities last week.
A sheet metal-worker who became a bar-owner, Specs (Richard Edward Simmons without the famous glasses) married and begat artists and art collectors. Live Worms Gallery on Grant Avenue hosted a brief exhibit of work by Specs' late wife, Cooper Union-trained Sonia; her sister; his daughter Elly; and local artist and OmniCircus theatre director Frank Garvey.
The Saturday festivities moved to the eponymous bar itself for Specs' 83rd birthday. Specs entertained representatives from several generations of San Franciscans, including ones who had lent him the money he needed to open the establishment in 1968.
Three tables of homemade food and the easy icebreaker, "How did you meet Specs?" kept the crowd happy and mingling. For instance, while I ate my cake, I sat next to this man:
Jesse Smith writes his journals in the font size equivalent of "You are blind now," and any writing that he deems unworthy, he burns "like a mandala." The rest he has published in zines and fiction websites. You never know who you're going to meet at a place like Specs. May Specs and his empire live on for years to come.
