New Literary Open Mic Is Special -- So Special, It's Gotta Have Some of Your Attention

Posted By on Wed, Aug 17, 2011 at 1:00 PM

Tucked into a nondescript little row of storefronts along Adeline is Berkeley's newest literary destination. Nick's Lounge has undergone a slight but meaningful makeover in the hands of new owner Bryan Smith.

In addition to a new coat of paint, some legendary William Gottlieb jazz portraits on the walls, and a jukebox overflowing with jazz classics, Nick's Lounge is also the home of the new monthly reading series Saturday Night Special.

It's hosted by Hollie Hardy, poet, San Francisco State University graduate student, and former editor-in-chief of Fourteen Hills, (see above) and Tomas Moniz, founder, writer, and editor of the award-winning fanzine Rad Dad, as well as cohost of the reading series Lyrics & Dirges (see below.)

The series gives writers a place in the East Bay to share their newest work, hang out, and swill an affordable drink or two in the name of literature. It promises no cover charge, plenty of open mic slots, and new poems or stories from a featured author.

Last month's premiere showcased the hilarious work of Rose Tully, whose stories seamlessly blend the mundane and familiar with the outrageous and surreal. Readers and listeners were an energized mix of San Francisco and East Bay writers, creative writing students, literature fans, curious neighborhood residents, and a smattering of Nick's Lounge regulars.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
