Hidden Gems in Netflix Streaming:
Smile and The Golden Child

"You may say I'm a streamer, but I'm not the only one."

With all the options available for Netflix streaming, it's hard to find a movie sometimes. You may only have time to watch one or two, but there are thousands to browse through. I'm picking out some of the hidden gems, often movies that are hard to find or not available on DVD. -- Bucky Sinister

Michael Ritchie's best known film is The Bad News Bears. The film is much bigger than his own legacy. While almost everyone can reference the film, only film buffs know who directed it. What's not very well known is Smile, a film about a small-time teenage beauty pageant that's better than Little Miss Sunshine and funnier than Waiting for Guffman, but like those two films combined. Keep an eye out for Melanie Griffith, when she still looked like the girl next door, pre-boob job that she got during the shooting of Bonfire of the Vanities. Read The Devil's Candy, Julie Salamon's book about the shooting of the movie, if you want to know more about that.

Read on to see video from Smile.

The above compilation looks like a trailer that's been set to music. Even without dialogue, it gives a good indication of the feel of Smile.

Ritchie went on to bigger Hollywood fare, striking oil with Fletch and The Golden Child. The Golden Child is a fine Eddie Murphy flick, a perfect vehicle. The entire rest of the cast is the straight man to Eddie's seal-laughing streetwise hero. The Golden Child is sure to offend Asians, Buddhists, Christians, and biker gangs at one point or another, but the film's plot is too ridiculous to be taken seriously. It was a top 10 movie 25 years ago (feel old yet?) but was considered a bit of a disappointment following Beverly Hills Cop, which made $234 million back when tickets were three bucks.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
