Light Asylum at Public Works: DIY Goth Fan Fashion

The Light Asylum show at Public Works on May 18 was Goth. In an industrial sort of fashion. There was a gentleman wearing a Bundeswehr tank with suspenders and a shaved head who I swear I danced with at a Skinny Puppy show in 1987. Another girl bopping around in a leather cap and short bleached hair looked like she was peeled off a "Safe Sex is Hot Sex" poster from 1991.

The first opening band, Boyz IV Men, sounded like the soundtrack to a really triumphant workout. The other openers, Water Borders, sounded, in the words of a friend, "Like angry oil derricks." Light Asylum came on so late that the singer kept telling everyone it was okay if they had to go, so I went, but not before noting that her powerful voice sounded like a female Peter Murphy. Except maybe Peter Murphy sounds like a female Peter Murphy. So maybe she sounds like Peter Murphy plus Grace Jones. Congratulations!

By the way, people dressed up for this event. Thank you.

I noted that headgear is all the rage! Scarves, turbans, little black Amish bowlers, dramatic floppy jobs, many styles were represented. I like this happy person Kelly's scarfy turban, and the classic stripes and the big smile. This is the person you want to be hanging out with at a Goth show. And look at the feet!
Kelly's not dancing, that's just the way Kelly's feet go naturally! That's special.
I asked this debonair gent if I could take his picture for a fashion blog, and he said "Sure! Is it for The Sartoralist, I wish?" I wish too, Sir! Then I wouldn't be working with this crappy camera! Anyway, this handsome devil goes by the name Tyler, and kudos for classing it up a bit! You won't see this guy in a hoodie.
I love these cutiepies and their big, good vibes and matching bangs 'n' braid hairdos. The lipstick of the lady on the left is my favorite shade right now, and can we get a close-up of that bundle of jewels mademoiselle on the right is sporting:
She just let it all get tangled into a giant dreadlock of golden necklaces and voila, a great look. Extra points if you can spot the googly eye and the monster nail art!
Hello, this is winner of the best name, Hermonie, like the heroine of a magical novel, and also winner of the best hat, best thrifted tunic-y thing, and wouldn't you know she made that cool necklace herself, out of resin? Hermonie lives in Baltimore, she's just passing through so don't waste your energy posting a Missed Connection or anything.
More Besties! And Bestie on the left is hella Goth! I love a face with some massive Goth eyebrows. This outfit included leather hot pants, a black tablecloth bleached into tatters and tucked into the back like a train, and a little white rabbit paw dangling at the thigh. And this amazing crystal bolo tie that Creature of the Night made by hand!
I am so psyched that crafty people have stopped knitting flowers and making wallets out of trash bags and duct tape, and are instead making lovely baubles with hard crystals and slabs of resin! Note the OPI cracked manicure. Nice.
This gentleman is named Russell, and though he looks like he's about to punch the paparazzi in this picture, I assure you he was most congenial. I took another of him smiling, but this one is better. Or maybe I just like a mean-looking man. After the shoot he thoughtfully asked, 'Do you want detail shots?' Uh, yeah, totally. I am a professional fashion blogger, after all.
It's the ankle of the tiger, it's the thrill of the fight. Russell has a music project called Black Jeans that has the dark vocals of Joy Division with the poppy beats of LCD Soundsystem. Look, now I'm a professional music blogger!
See, you can do more with longer hair! Dylan knows paper bag waists + half-shirts = yes.
Doesn't it feel like if you stare at into her eyes too long you'll burst into flames? This witch child is named Rita and she is wearing pants. I love a fancy gothling in pants! Let's get closer to that pendant, too:
The hair plus the sparkle plus the giant golden jewel. Well done.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
