Al Madrigal's Promising Daily Show Debut

Posted By on Wed, May 18, 2011 at 11:13 AM

Al Madrigal, The Daily Show's new Senior Latino Correspondent, has a face that seems like a caricature artist whipped it up: wicked smirk, scribble of beard, and eyebrows that jerk up above the rims of his Elvis Costello glasses and hang there as black and sharply cut as what a pro might carve in a jack-o'-lantern.

He was pretty funny, too. First he gave Jon Stewart gentle hell for having waited so long to hire a Latino correspondent. Then he explained the relevance of teardrop tats, celebrated Las Vegas as the exemplar of American culture, and skewered U.S. misconceptions about Latinos. The audience laughs weren't huge, and Madrigal seemed a touch less confident than he does on his excellent stand-up special, but it confirms for us our suspicion -- mentioned yesterday -- that this San Francisco native will seriously jack up our Who Is the Best Daily Show Correspondent brackets.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
