San Francisco State Comedy Team Competes for National Title in Rooftop Stand-Up Tournament

Posted on Wed, Mar 9, 2011 at 7:00 PM

A team of San Francisco State students is competing for a national title in stand-up comedy. What's that? You didn't know the NCAA did that sort of thing? Well, it doesn't. (Not that we know of, anyway.) This group is punch-lining its way to victory in Rooftop Comedy's National College Comedy Competition.

Jules Posner (in the clip above), Pharoah Daniels (in the first clip), Jesse Fernandez, and Zach Chiappellone make up SF State's team, one of 32 in the tournament. They did short sets last week at the Purple Onion competing against the team from UC Santa Cruz. The clips are posted on the Rooftop site, and starting Thursday, viewers can vote on who they believe should advance to the next round. The voting continues through Friday.

After this round, 16 teams will remain, Fernandez said. The next round of competition in April will reduce that number to eight. The surviving teams at that point will roast each other to determine the final four, Fernandez said, and a panel of judges from the entertainment industry will decide a winning team as well as four MVPs. The MVPs will perform on TBS Presents Just for Laughs, Chicago.

You can see all the clips of the SF State team here, as well as clips from other members of the team who were cut in a previous round. The voting begins Thursday at 10 a.m. and is open through Friday at 6 p.m. You can view the tournament bracket here and link to all the teams' performances.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
