Chuck Ragan has a "serious soft spot" for San Francisco. In fact, in 2001, the singer-songwriter and his future wife, Jill, had their first date in the city. After playing a show at Slim's with his former Gainesville, Fla., punk…

Live Review: Weird Al Yankovic Needs to Work on His Live Shows

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect out of Weird Al Yankovic's The Mandatory World Tour when it stopped at the City National Civic in San Jose Sunday night. Though I'm more of a casual Weird Al fan ("UHF" is…

Fear Itself: Marcus Ghiasi of Your Fearless Leader

Musicians aren't always fearless. In fact, Marcus Ghiasi — the frontman for San Francisco indie-rock band Your Fearless Leader — was gripped by anxiety during his first performance under that moniker, on a trip to South Africa in December 2014.…

Live Review: San Francisco Symphony Performs Ratatouille in Concert

Ratatouille is far from my favorite Pixar movie. I say that not to open the can of worms that is debating which of the now-Disney owned animation studio's films are the best — because we'd be here all day…

Ozomatli @ The New Parish

Ozomatli isn't messing around and it has the Grammys to prove it. The band's 2001 release Embrace the Chaos won a Grammy for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album, an award the band won again in 2005. The Los Angeles band blends…

Ratatouille @ Davies Symphony Hall

Well, it looks like the orchestra is going to the rats. One specific rat, that is. This weekend, the San Francisco Symphony will project the 2007 animated Pixar film Ratatouille while the orchestra plays the score live. If you haven't…

Chris Farren Is The Guy Behind The Smiths Parody T-Shirt

Chris Farren is an enigma wrapped in a T-shirt. In what almost seems like a past life, the former Naples, FL resident and self-proclaimed punk-rock celebrity, fronted the indie emo-pop band Fake Problems. Since then, he's been busy. He formed…

Live Review: Gogol Bordello Never Fails to Impress (Even Though I've Seen Them Perform Four Times Already This Year)

There are some things you'll only see at a Gogol Bordello concert. For instance: Frontman Eugene Hutz reaching under the legs of another band member to strum on an accordion. A bouquet of flowers being launched into the audience…

The Who @ Oracle Arena

The Who may have started as a teenage wasteland, but the band is still going strong well into its golden years. Case in point: The Who is currently on a worldwide tour — and have been since 2014 — to…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
