Japan has a vast well of underground psychedelic music that's virtually untapped by an American public afraid of language barriers and import prices. Over the past few years, however, the Scottish imprint Geographic -- run by indie rock icon Stephen…

Ben Kunin

The soothing coastal paintings and pastel color washes on the packaging of Marin resident Ben Kunin's debut CD seem to indicate something mellow is about to waft from the speakers. Indeed, a solo-guitar instrumental album titled Acoustic Adventures brings to…

Brigitte Fontaine & Areski

In the last 10 years or so, folk music, in all its glorious manifestations, has been steadily reinfecting underground music. What better time, then, for the Italian label Get Back to reissue Brigitte Fontaine & Areski's avant-folk masterpiece from 1974,…

Troll

The Bay Area has long been a breeding ground for odd musical beasts: psychedelia in the '60s, damaged art-punk and industrial in the '70s and '80s, and experimental noise and weirdo beats in the '90s. Lest you think this vile…

My Morning Jacket

Despite being My Morning Jacket's second effort for Sacramento independent label Darla Records, At Dawn hardly qualifies as indie. Instead, the Nashville group draws inspiration from relics like the Eagles and the Band, pushing stadium-size Americana into a darker place.…

Shelby Bryant

As pop music goes, Shelby Bryant's solo debut, Cloud-Wow Music, is more Sid and Marty Krofft than John Lennon and Paul McCartney. In fact, consider this review an impassioned appeal to a big TV network to give Bryant his own…

Howe

Over the past 20 years Giant Sand's dodgy genius Howe Gelb has released an equal number of albums of fractured Americana. Except for a few brief major label flirtations, Gelb's works have been confined to small labels and his own…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
