Eastern Star

The biggest temptation for a new establishment in Hayes Valley is to take the neighborhood's prevailing aesthetic -- cute, homespun urban chic -- and go overboard with it. Paul K., the new bistro on the corner of Gough and Oak,…

Heartless Beauty

The only thing understated about the latest addition to the Steuart Street restaurant corridor is its name. "Chaya" in Japanese refers to a casual tea house. Chaya Brasserie, on the other hand, is a majestic, highly polished pleasure dome, with…

Lan of the Lost

It's hard to know what to make of Bistro Lan. Two terrific, well-run restaurants have failed at 2299 Van Ness in the last couple of years: Bella Luna and Pair. Let's just say it would be ironic if Bistro Lan…

Plus -a Change

For years, Nadine's was a quiet favorite of the Glenview neighborhood of Oakland. Recently, though, it has metamorphosed into Sophie's, operating under the guidance of new chef/owner Alexander Baccarat, who worked with the owner of Nadine's and seems to be…

Voilà! Viola.

Bistro Viola is the kind of bistro you wish were right on your block. Of course, if you do happen to live by Bistro Viola, you're doing pretty well: You probably get your bread fresh at Acme and your wine…

Leaving the American Sector

Walzwerk is a tiny establishment, tucked into the little space in which the exquisite Tandoor E Taj flourished so briefly. It's billed as an East German restaurant, and it is only somewhat far-fetched to claim that East Germany's 40 years…

White Wedding

Neo, though it hasn't been around for long, has already acquired a bit of a reputation as the restaurant ballsy enough to have chosen an all-white design scheme. On stepping into the restaurant you recall art galleries, ultrahygienic medical theaters,…

Geometry Problem

It is a bit of a shock to arrive at Bandol for the first time and realize that it's where the old U.S. Restaurant used to be. The space, which was once dark, old-school, family-style North Beach Italian, has become…

Pho Star

The rumor that members of the kitchen staff from Chez Panisse eat at Vi's in their off hours remains, alas, just a rumor. Calls to Chez Panisse and its employees were answered with demurrals, and inquiries by other means, including…

The Sun Also Rises

Le Soleil has become a Richmond standby. The spot is strategically located at the easternmost end of Clement's mighty chain of Asian restaurant delights, and so probably draws a number of customers from newcomers to the neighborhood who've strolled too…

Nuevo Trendino

New York is simply overrun with them, but San Francisco has surprisingly few. They can be interesting, cozy, and smart when done right, but all too often are just repetitive and trite. I speak not of pashmina shawls, but of…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
