Clio Barnard Talks Reinventing the Biopic with "The Arbor"

How do you tell a true story? If "based-on-actual-events" fiction distorts, and tell-all documentaries cherry-pick, how else to get at the real voice of experience? With her eerie and disarming feature debut The Arbor, British video artist Clio Barnard offers…

Daytime Trauma

Simon Rumley’s revenge-triangle flick, Red White & Blue, has the dense dramatic content of a soap-opera plot. But instead of gazing intensely, the beleaguered characters reach for knives and duct tape. The style is haute-horror in a grungy Austin setting:…

"The Housemaid": An unsatisfying update to the sexy postwar original

Fifty years after Kim Ki-young's postwar hothouse original, Im Sang-soo attempts a sleek, breathless update to the tale of a household riven by a sexy domestic. This time around, instead of a family-man music teacher getting ensnared, a bored, feckless…

The Sicilian Girl

The facts are more gripping than the filmmaking in Marco Amenta's routine docudrama about tenacious teen informer Rita Atria. The 17-year-old Sicilian spitfire made jaws drop in 1991 by testifying against a homegrown capo — a reliable way of commissioning…

"Mesrine": Rambling tale of a gangster-showman

The two-part tale of French gangster-showman Jacques Mesrine is as densely packed and serially rambling as a well-trafficked Wikipedia entry. Director Jean-François Richet, who whipped up not-bad mayhem in his Assault on Precinct 13 remake, devotes so much time to…

The Secret in Their Eyes

Say what you will, but the lead actors in Argentine director Juan Jose Campanella's latest film do have lovely (or at least handsomely shot) peepers. But the secrets you ultimately find therein are hilarious. Feeling like he's missed out on…

Collapse

Chris Smith’s one-man doc on veteran doomsayer Michael C. Ruppert holds less interest as another sky-is-falling dispatch than as the filmmaker’s return to warts-and-all portraiture after 2008’s well-received fiction feature The Pool. Ten years ago, Smith's arthouse-circuit hit American Movie…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
