Halou

On its third album Wholeness and Separation, S.F. trio Halou finds strength in surface and texture. Ethereal sounds unfurl like gossamer, and Rebecca Coseboom sings on "Tubefed," "We appeal to your basic nature ... You won't have to think too…

Public Enemy Featuring Paris

Rebirth of a Nation is a return to form for Public Enemy in unexpected ways. It's something of a chop session led by the Bay Area rapper Paris -- whose trademark deep, rippling bass grooves rumble throughout the music, making…

Chicago Underground Duo

Nearly a decade ago, trumpeter Rob Mazurek's Chicago Underground project sought to bring avant-garde jazz to the mainstream via the Windy City's Thrill Jockey Records, then one of the country's most adventurous indie labels. Even without widespread public accolades, the…

Dilated Peoples

Four albums deep, L.A.'s Dilated Peoples stick to the same formula they've used since their classic "Work the Angles" single back in 1998. As a result, 20/20 is a familiar take on traditional hip hop. Rakaa gives a standout performance,…

Tortoise and Bonnie "Prince" Billy

Will Oldham (aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy) isn't someone you'd necessarily associate with "fun," so the opening tracks on The Brave and the Bold, an engaging collection of cover songs recorded with Tortoise, are a welcome surprise. Oldham tackles Milton Nascimento's…

My Morning Jacket's sound is expansive. It's strong enough to carry through an arena or an acres-wide campground, yet intimate enough to waft softly through your headphones. The Louisville, Ky., quintet -- currently touring in support of its new release,…

Sound Salvation

TV on the Radio's utter distinctiveness has driven critics to scrounge for adjectives. The vocal harmonies of Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe have been compared to everything from the Beach Boys and Peter Gabriel to gospel music. But lead singer…

Look Inward Voyager

Midnight Movies isn't your stereotypical rock act. It doesn't bang out tortured, obsessive love songs about past paramours and current flames. And, although it's played a string of "Swing the State" concerts around the country with neo-new wave band Metric,…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
