First Meal of the Rest of Your Life: Disaster Gives Way to New Hunger

Three years ago, a five-alarm fire tore apart the back half of a pink Victorian in NOPA. Neighbors saw flames licking out of the back window — my window — and called 911. No one was home. A stranger gave…

East Bay Bite of the Week: The Simple, Seasonal Creations of Little Spoon Soup

Before it was born, Little Spoon Soup had been puttering through the daydreams of Sean Betouliere and Erica Garrecht-Williams for a few years. Through that time, the two were avid cooking partners, animating the communal kitchen of a large and…

A couple of months ago, Daniel Patterson closed the doors on his Oakland hideout Plum, only to kick them open a few days later with his Japanese-flavored reinvention, Ume — a more casual iteration to suit the neighborhood's enthusiasm for…

East Bay Bite of the Week: Tripe Guisado at Comal

Downtown Berkeley is a bit strange. Amid decades-old copy shops, small spots hawking spices in bulk, and cafés serving the kind of espresso that's built more to get you through an all night study session than compete with the soft…

East Bay Bite of the Week: Pavs at Juhu Beach Club

A little over a year ago, a buzzy, chromatic little spot opened onto a burgeoning corner in Temescal. It was a small space for the big name and big game that former Top Chef contestant Preeti Mistry brought to town,…

East Bay Bite of the Week: Breakfast at Elmwood Café

Elmwood café may only be four years old, but the stools inside are postwar relics. The roots of the café begin in 1921, when it opened its doors as the Elmwood Soda Fountain. After WWII, an aviator by the name…

East Bay Bite of the Week: Uni Risotto at Iyasare

Dropped right into Berkeley's high-end corridor -- a stretch along Fourth Street in the western part of town peppered with home décor shops and sensible clothes for refined suburban women -- Iyasare feels like a bit of salvation. The new…

East Bay Bite of the Week: Pedro's Favorite at Café Brazil

Next to the serving window of his outdoor restaurant, Pedro Robin rings a bell, summoning from the kitchen a few skewered samples of tri-tip smothered in a creamy green sauce. He distributes them to the growing line, clapping shoulders…

East Bay Bite of the Week: Mac and Cheese at Homeroom

Homeroom does, in fact, feel a bit like a homeroom. The back wall is a chalkboard, the vibe is playful, and the menu is every elementary schooler's dream: it's entirely mac and cheese. The theme is gimmicky, and I've resisted…

Rip van Wafels Launches Coffee & Tea Subscription

By now, his wafels are a staple in third wave coffee shops, but Abhishek "Rip" Pruisken is just getting started. He's the man behind Rip Van Wafels, those thin, caramel-laced wafels modeled off Dutch stroopwafels that have lately become a…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
