Club 8

In 1996, when Club 8 released its first album, Nouvelle, various zines and indie music mags described the Swedish duo's sound as "Astrud Gilberto gone indie-pop." While the group's music did indeed bear a resemblance to Gilberto's atmospheric bossa nova,…

Film School

Listening to an album for the first time can be like "hanging out" with someone new. You don't know whether an evening will end in a kiss or whether it's just a trip to the movies. Film School's debut LP,…

Electro Group

When you begin to listen to Electro Group's debut album, A New Pacifica, you know right away that you've got some serious noise to reckon with. The Sacramento trio combines the heady guitar drones and electronic sounds of Stereolab with…

Music, Ladytron

The English band Ladytron calls itself "retro futurist," an oxymoron meant to indicate backward-looking forward thought. It may sound confusing but it works. From the opening instrumental track "Mu-Tron" to the final, droning-yet-melodic number "Skools Out...," the group evokes real…

Madonna Ray of Light (Maverick) "I traded fame for love," are the first words out of Madonna's mouth on Ray of Light. Like hell she did. If she's indeed found true love, as the album keeps reminding you she has,…

Mouse on Mars Stereolab without vocals. Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma -- the two DYsseldorfers behind Mouse on Mars -- probably wouldn't mind the diminutive charge; the members of the two bands are friends and collaborators. But it says…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
