Cloud Burst

A 300-foot flame rose into Nevada's pre-dawn desert sky on July 16, and 100 onlookers stood transfixed, watching the moonlike landscape brighten under a fiery mushroom cloud. The genesis of this jaw-dropping spectacle? Six large fans rigged with nozzles spraying…

I, Chocoholic

It was the Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus who, in a fit of decidedly unscientific brilliance, gave chocolate its taxonomic description, theobroma, which translates to "food of the gods." Turns out his fanciful name carries some weight, since it has been…

This Week's Day-by-Day Picks

Wednesday, June 15, 2005 It's time to bust this thing wide open: Shannon Ferguson is from Petaluma. Sure, he's the guitar player for "NYC's" glamorous Longwave, an exploding rock band on the rebound from opening for the Strokes. But usually,…

This Week's Day-by-Day Picks

Wednesday, June 8, 2005 Most memoirs, when they're not revealing embarrassing details about enemies and exes, are an avalanche of nostalgic Leave It to Beaver moments. But when Simon Doonan looked back on his journey from working-class British lad to…

English Invasion

The Golden Arches emblazoned with "Phat Food" and the jaillike columns of the Supreme Court pictured with the slogan "Your Apathy Is Our Strength" -- these are just two of the "refaced" billboards found in the boroughs of New York…

Wednesday, June 1, 2005 "The production and waste of waribashi directly oppose the Shinto creed," writes Jiro Taylor on JapanVisitor.com of the disposable wooden chopsticks you've probably not considered for more than it takes to eat a sushi meal. According…

This Week's Day-by-Day Picks

Wednesday, May 25, 2005 We were big fans of Richie's artwork in The Royal Tenenbaums, but because Richie was fictional, we knew someone else had to be behind it. We were right (nothing gets by us!); it was Eric Chase…

This Week's Day-by-Day Picks

Wednesday, May 11, 2005 Geniuses, man. They act kooky, wear weird clothes, work their highly intelligent fingers to the bone, and at some point, create stuff that blows your lower intelligence quotient out of the water, hopefully in a good…

This Week's Day-by-Day Picks

Wednesday, May 4, 2005 It beats us why anyone else likes Bright Eyes. Bandleader Conor Oberst, to put it mildly, is no opera singer, and he's also self-obsessed, unashamed of his drug abuse, and whiny. It so happens that we…

Art Bandits

The word "pirate" conjures up a caricature of a one-earringed buccaneer who sails the high seas, plundering others' treasures and burying the loot in a far-off Shangri-La. But in recent years, "piracy" has come to refer to the misuse of…

Word Warriors

When corporate-backed music took over the airwaves, the only option for up-and-coming bands was to espouse the do-it-yourself credo that has now become de rigueur in the punk scene. Other art forms such as the cinema and the circus had…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
