They walk among us. They resemble people, approximate our words and actions, present themselves more or less as human. And yet they are more -- a different species, with their own dark legends, their own clandestine meeting places. They are…

If you've ever gone line-dancing with a gaggle of amputees on crank and hallucinogens, you know something of the feeling engendered by viewing Alexander. This broad, bold, and ambitious film by Oliver Stone presents itself as a fairly straightforward endeavor,…

"I know why I hate integrity," moans Jeremy Irons late in Callas Forever. "It's great for the person who has it; it's pure hell for those around it." Indeed. As tacky, ponytailed impresario Larry Kelly, Irons makes for one seriously…

Oh, that Johnny Depp. Played in some dime-a-dozen rock bands, did some average television, made a few cutesy little movies. Whatever. Yeah, he messes with his looks in a fun way sometimes, but otherwise he merely rides that nicotine-sunken-cheeks thing…

The Grudge bears the imprimatur of Sam Raimi, but alas, neither his sense of fun nor his smarts. The wunderkind director behind the Spider-Man and Evil Dead franchises has followed in the path of Robert Zemeckis and Joel Silver with…

Let's just get the term out of the way up front. The term is "fag hag" -- and a thousand pardons, sensitive readers, but there is no PC equivalent. This new film, Stage Beauty, is an absolute fag-hag fiesta. Beneath…

Revolutionary idolatry is an odd business. Just ask unruly pop singer Stew, of the unruly pop group the Negro Problem. On his Naked Dutch Painter album, the melodic rebel dares to challenge a very sacred image. "Don't you wish there…

From way over here in the West, it's kind of difficult to discern what the Siamese (since 1939, the Thai) people did to piss off their Burmese neighbors so royally, but over generations their epic clashes have become the stuff…

It's the 10th anniversary of John Duigan's smart, sensual, and superb movie Sirens, and I'm reflecting on the comment of a female friend when I asked her how she liked it. At the time, in American pop culture, we were…

Fortune smiles on groovy egregiousness. In the case of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, the filmmaker's investment in his weird visions is wildly unorthodox, but the payoff is oddly satisfying. The movie features myriad killer robots, raucous underwater…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
