Dining, Eat A-List

About a month ago, I walked to Brooklyn, which didn't take long (I was staying at a friend's place in Manhattan). Still, my dogs were barking by the time I returned, so I strolled up to a friend's rooftop deck,…

The Zest of Times

The quarters were tight at Limón, the Mission's coziest new hot spot, which afforded Rachel and me a discreet view of the stylish young man and woman at the next table. Not only could I see how well-caramelized the guy's…

Dining, Eat Phodown

Any number of things could bring a person to the Tenderloin's Larkin Street corridor, a gritty enclave where young bohemians and Civic Center 9-to-5ers pass immigrants, strip club patrons, students from the nearby Culinary Academy, and the occasional obscenity-spouting thug.…

Basque to the Future

I first dined at Pastis, which has now become Piperade, late last year. Judging by my superb braised veal cheeks with winter root vegetables, Pastis did not, by any means, need a revamp. Chef/owner Gerald Hirigoyen (most noted for his…

Mission Too

Trek south of Cesar Chavez Street and you'll enter what could be called the Other Mission, an area that doesn't run as deep, barwise, as the Mission proper, but that spares you the ever-present pee stink of its northern neighbor.…

Dining, Eat So-So Chic

So-So Chic

It's been a while since a restaurant made as dazzling a first impression on me as RNM. My friend Rachel and I were seated in the mezzanine, a dark, secluded balcony where stylish couples lounged on couches, sipping wine, nibbling…

Mixed Breed

A motley crew of barhoppers rules the night in Dogpatch, a diverse and rapidly changing hodgepodge of quaint Victorians, heavy industry, and spanking-new live-work lofts. By 10 p.m. on a Friday, the workday rumble has lapsed into silence. Some bars…

Spanish Fly

Earlier this year, a friend was kind enough to buy me dinner at a downtown seafood joint. Maybe "joint" isn't the right word: We dined at Aqua, a four-star temple of culinary showmanship, where the entrees start at $29. If…

The Sporting Life

If there's a problem with watching sports on Sundays during early autumn it's that the average fan lacks the equipment to do the job right. Hence, folks trek to Zeke's, at the corner of Third and Brannan, where 16 televisions…

Dining, Eat A Perfect 10

A Perfect 10

Consider yourself lucky if you have a 10-spot in your pocket: It's all you need to enjoy the splendors of Osha, a late-night Thai noodle joint that delivers more flavor for the dollar than any restaurant I can name. For…

As is the case with family members, cilantro, and the recordings of Britney Spears, people tend either to love or to hate the Marina Triangle (aka the intersection of Fillmore and Greenwich). Feelings aside, one must admit that the area…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
