C.L.A.W.S. for Alarm

Finding visual images to represent techno music is tricky. That's why the genre's record label logos favor sleek, vaguely futuristic text on monochromatic backgrounds. For his techno-leaning project C.L.A.W.S., San Francisco producer, DJ, and promoter Brian Hock chose a psychotic-eyed…

Plan B

We knew that buying into the Streets — and his pub-chatter grime storytelling — was musically irresponsible. We guessed we'd be egging on a whole generation of angry white limeys to "educate us" about "what the young blokes are up…

Mad Professor widens dub's diaspora

Dawn of Dubstep

Local promoters of dubstep, the latest mutation of underground U.K. dance music, seem to engage in similar anxious pre-show rituals. Having taken the plunge with a lineup of a genre alien to even most full-time clubbers, they'll peel the labels…

Owen Maigret's Conquering Label

If any visual artist captured the ethos of the San Francisco house music scene during its '90s salad days, it would be Owen Maigret. As with hippies and their cherished Grateful Dead poster art, an aging raver need only glance…

Gettin' a leg up on dubstep with Hatcha and Youngsta

Nurtured on Detroit's own proprietary blend of techno and soul, ADULT.(comprising married couple Adam Lee Miller and Nicola Kuperus) takes its machine punk-funk to provocative corners. Last year's Gimmie Trouble album found vocalist Kuperus at her most confident, where what…

Pick Up on This

Like yogurt, some ideas need to ferment before they're palatable to the masses. Take the laptop music micro-movement that kicked off in San Francisco in the '90s. Skinny guys with glasses, hunched stoically over iBooks and impervious to the dictates…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
