"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1": Too Many Montages, Not Enough Horror

The single advantage the awful Twilight movies have over Stephenie Meyer's awful-but-gripping novels is that, unlike the books' sad-sack, movie Bella Swan is a spiky, populist heroine. On film, Kristen Stewart beautifully underplays (or, for all I know, overplays to…

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon": The Enjoyable Hum of Your Brain Cells Dying

The two hours and 34 minutes of Transformers: Dark of the Moon are loaded with unimaginable violence, but only one spasm left the audience speechless at the theater where I watched it. They cheered the robot-on-robot slugfests, rendered in terabyte-straining…

"Welcome to the Rileys": Kristen Stewart is an antistar

Some young actors yearn for that flashy role in a blockbuster movie that will prove their bankability to a doubting Hollywood. Kristen Stewart, on the other hand, seems determined to accentuate her antistar bona fides, delivering aggressively affectless interviews and…

"Tangled": Disney's latest makes Rapunzel funny and lively

"Great," sighs the wicked witch in Tangled, a CG-animated spin on the Rapunzel story, "now I'm the bad guy." Mother Gothel, the frizzy-haired, sharp-featured enchantress with the inimitable voice of Donna Murphy, is Disney's first villainess whose chief crime is…

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows": The kids are not all right

A teenage witch stands trembling behind her unsuspecting mother and father, wand raised. Obliviate, she whispers, and her parents' eyes go glassy, their memories erased. On the mantel, the girl's image disappears from the family's photos. Blinking back tears, she…

"127 Hours": James Franco saws his arm off in Danny Boyle's new thriller

Other people besides James Franco appear in 127 Hours, but as they're unimportant, they will not be mentioned in this review. Danny Boyle's film — based on the story of Aron Ralston, who in 2003 cut off his own arm…

"Freakonomics": Morgan Spurlock, Alex Gibney, and others make shorts based on the pop-math book

A quartet of uneven TV pilots posing as a full-length documentary, Seth Gordon's anthology, Freakonomics, pulls case studies from Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt's bestselling book of pop-math and hands them over to famous doc filmmakers to make their own.…

"Jack Goes Boating": Philip Seymour Hoffman and stage pals get it right

Jack Goes Boating is Philip Seymour Hoffman's movie — it's his directorial debut; he stars as its namesake sad sack; he wears his hair in those terrible dreadlocks that he covered with a big woolen hat at the Oscars last…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage.
