Stateless: More vaudeville than hip-hop

The Jewish love affair with hip-hop — a romance grounded in the art of the Beastie Boys, the High and Mighty, Lyor Cohen, MC Serch, DJ Steinski, and Blood of Abraham, among many, many others — has been thoroughly documented…

Mrs. Whitney, success when a playwright also directs

I recently asked several local dramatists whether they thought playwrights should direct their own plays. The question arose following a performance of the Magic Theatre's world premiere of Mrs. Whitney. John Kolvenbach, the play's author, also directs. Kolvenbach's beautiful directing…

"The Future Project": Sunday Will Come

Over the course of the average lifetime, a person takes around 700 million breaths. It may be the case, as the axiom goes, that "life isn't measured by how many breaths you take, but by how many moments take your…

Philip Kan Gotanda's new play is hard to swallow

Redrum Burger in Davis has built up quite a reputation since it opened in 1986. Locals identify the fast food joint by its humongous one-pounder patties, heavily tattooed employees, and a heart-stoppingly breaded and deep-fried menu item known as ZOOM!…

The Rosies of Richmond make riveting subject matter in This World in a Woman's Hands

Overproduced Noel Coward adaptation Brief Encounter proves that sometimes less is more

In the United States, hardly anyone takes the train anymore. Perhaps that's why rail travel seems so hopelessly romantic, conjuring up images of missed connections, fond farewells, and figures emerging like ghosts from a platform's swirling steam. It's no wonder…

This year's Fringe Festival preview was a total disaster

I've always maintained that one of the best things about attending an unjuried Fringe Festival such as the one we have annually here in San Francisco is the crapshoot aspect. Visit one theater to watch a scantily clad girlfriend and…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
