Sixteen Horsepower Low Estate (A&M) Nostalgic music need not be ironic. Or so declare Denver's Sixteen Horsepower with the release of their second full-length album of esoteric, dark hillbilly blues. Opposed to the dissected tones and pilfered authenticity of garage…

KRS-One I Got Next (Jive) Only the fools who maintain a willful ignorance of hip hop's influence on pop culture would deny KRS-One (aka Kris Parker) his props. His combination of authority, longevity, and integrity is matched only by Sonic…

Dr. Octagon Dr. Octagonecologyst Instrumentalyst (Dreamworks) Dr. Octagon, aka Kool Keith, is one of the great paradoxes in hip hop. Whether for his work on Dr. Octagonecologyst, the Mo' Wax import recently released in these parts by Dreamworks, or for…

Cheap Trick (Cheap Trick/Red Ant Entertainment) Before we bog ourselves down in the bubble gum, let's get the disclaimer out of the way: The purpose of this essay isn't to compare Cheap Trick to John Coltrane, or Bob Dylan, or…

Star Pimp Docudrama (Kill Rock Stars) Many hipsters relish butt-ugly folk art of the sort that decorates the cover of Star Pimp's Docudrama, but only for its kitsch value. The awfulness of such product -- or, more accurately, the awfulness…

When Lou Reed's friends started dying, of course we heard about it. If he grew up in public, he may as well grow old there, too. He called his pretentious, jerky lamentation Magic and Loss. At some point, after wading…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
