Recall Why You Stay by the Bay

It's like the bumper stickers say: Regime change begins at home. The sentiment may have political origins, but there's no reason why it shouldn't be applied much closer to home. We're talking about your home, San Francisco, and that sorry…

Feeling Crabby

Being a native San Franciscan comes with obvious benefits. You get to call it Frisco or San Fran or Shaky Town or Land of Fruits and Nuts or whatever the hell else you want. You earned that right at public…

Picky, Picky

I come from a long line of pickers. Not the banjo-playing or nose-digging variety, mind you, but the people who reach across the table for a forkful of ... well, whatever you're having (it doesn't really matter). We are the…

The Once and Future City

Pardon me while I have a Herb Caen moment. As much as I thank God daily for things like camera-equipped cell phones, supermarkets that double as banks, and panko-crusted macaroni with fromage blanc, I still wax nostalgic for San Francisco's…

Chaat Amongst Yourselves

It has always seemed peculiar to me that here, in the birthplace of the United Nations, you could run down the street and grab a quick, inexpensive Senegalese or Istrian meal, but going out for Indian food was always a…

Heart and Soul

This recent string of natural disasters has got me thinking about the enduring nature of places. Tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods -- they have a funny way of blowing into town and wiping the slate clean, like an eraser on a…

This Week in Soup

So there I was thumbing through David Rakoff's latest collection at my favorite bookstore, Phoenix Books, when the smell hit me -- a tantalizing waft of earthy greens, chicken broth, and something beany and lemony coming from a cup behind…

The Deep Divide

I've always contended that the divide between San Francisco and Oakland/Berkeley goes much further than just traversing a bridge over troubled, gridlocked waters. The physical barrier is one thing. You get in your car or on your Richmond-bound BART train.…

In this latest installment of Bonnie Answers Life's Big Questions, we bypass the usual burning issues (Why do they call it a toothbrush instead of a teethbrush? Who was standing at the door in the season finale of Veronica Mars?…

My Big, Fat-Free Column

God help me, is there anything more depressing and unseemly than a food writer on a diet? It's positively un-American. But years of cultivating a lifestyle in which the input far exceeded the output has taken its toll on my…

Home Is Where the Corn Bread Is

Before I render an opinion that's bound to generate negative mail, let me say I've been a big fan of Home (the restaurant) since its debut in 2002. Home has always seemed very much at home in the Castro, even…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
