Cremaster 3 is the final installment of Matthew Barney's five-part Cremaster cycle. If that reads like a typo, be informed that, over the last decade, Barney has been filming and releasing the different episodes out of order, if the numbering…

Talk about tough acts to follow: The original 1999 Matrix, a critical and commercial smash, came almost as a revelation out of nowhere -- if the combination of Joel Silver, Warner Bros., and roughly 60 million bucks qualifies as "nowhere."…

The title Morvern Callar may sound like an Edward Gorey book or a job designation for telephone solicitors, but it's actually a name -- pronounced (roughly) "Mawvin Calla" (like the lily). Although some sources claim that morvern callar is Scots…

Sand Through an Hourglass

Thanks to the fickleness of pop culture, the French writer Amandine Aurore Lucie Dupin (1804-1876), aka George Sand, may be better known for her relationship to Frédéric Chopin than for her novels, her other romances, or her generally bold life.…

Blood Work, Clint Eastwood's 23rd film as director, is another crime thriller in the mode of, but better than, True Crime (1999) and Absolute Power (1997), two of his last three films. More than these, however, it resembles In the…

The bad news for Memento fans is that Christopher Nolan's Insomnia is far less complex and challenging in form than the backward-edited art-house hit that sparked as much disdain as devotion among moviegoers last year. The good news for Memento…

A Closing Iris

After a long absence from American screens, British stage director Richard Eyre, best known for his agreeably nasty The Ploughman's Lunch in 1982, makes his return with an alternately depressing and uplifting drama about Dame Iris Murdoch's descent into Alzheimer's…

Miguel Piñero was poet, playwright, and actor -- and thief, liar, and junkie. If everyone has within him a mix of the beautiful and the ugly, few of us have either to the extremes Piñero did. He was in Sing…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
