Original Joe's: Hitting a Homer at AT&T Park

Scanning over the Giants' pre-season press release, we saw mention of a new Original Joe's burger being served at AT&T Park that drew our ire. Why would a vaunted institution like Original Joe's lend its name to what was sure…

Deli Board: Don't Fear the Breakfast Sandwich

Bacon, sausage, fried eggs. At first glance, the description of Deli Board's BK sandwich ($11) doesn't exactly provoke visions of a sexy brunch. In fact, upon delivery to a rickety sidewalk table, this breakfast appears downright ghastly. A unification of…

Batter Up: Mastering the Art of Deep-Frying

A graffiti-covered sliding window behind a cold, windy Muni stop in the Excelsior District seems an odd spot for the city's lone dive specializing in Texas State Fair "cuisine." Odder still, its owner, Patrick Lee, is a San Francisco-bred dot-com…

Sandwich Innovation: S.F. Chefs Create Single-Plate Artistry

Spurred on by start-ups like Pal's Takeaway, Kitchenette, and Deli Board, San Francisco's sandwich scene has taken a huge leap over the past few years, providing a myriad of options beyond the once-standard Dutch-crunch-cased, cold-cut-crammed gut-bomb. This trend hasn't gone…

West of Pecos: Southwestern Food Is Deliciously Back

Didn't the Bay Area's Southwestern food fad blow away a long time ago, like a lone desert tumbleweed in the wind? In 1986, Alice Waters protégé Mark Miller left his Santa Fe Bar and Grill and bolted for the real…

Bar Gain: Small Kitchens Produce Deluxe Bar Food

"Is this a pop-up?" my dining companion shouted in between mouthfuls of a peppered duck chow fun ($11). The dish was so finessed it could have been on one of Iron Chef Chinese Chen Kenichi's winning menus, perhaps in the…

Bottle Cap: This Eclectic Place Shouldn't Try to Fit In

Shaded by a row of tall cypresses and wedged between a dental practice and an all-you-can-eat sushi joint, nearly year-old Bottle Cap seemed a million miles away from the glitz and glamour going on across Washington Square at newly deemed…

Southpaw BBQ: New Joint Spices (and Salts) Up the Mission

At around 10 on a recent Monday night, 6-month-old Southpaw BBQ was just starting to jump. LCD Soundsystem blended into Broken Bells on the amped-up speakers, while a Red Sox-capped bro alternated between shots of tequila and bites of fried…

1058 Hoagies: A Nice Jewish Boy Makes Good Italian Sandwiches

Adam Mesnick is quick to distinguish the offerings at his new venture, 1058 Hoagies, from his SOMA sandwich mecca, Deli Board. "Deli Board is my baby. Everything is perfect down to the wrapper. With hoagies, I can be a little…

Mission Bowling Club: Anthony Myint Scores Again

I don't really like bowling. My high game was a 138, I think, and that was certainly with tipsy scoring. Though an almost native San Franciscan, I didn't tear up at the closing of Japantown Bowl, nor did I care…

Fresh Eats: Belly Burgers: Tom Pizzica Graduates to Pop-Ups

Perched in a corner of the minuscule kitchen at Clooney's Pub in the Mission, Tom Pizzica doesn't pull any punches when discussing his new pop-up, Belly Burgers. "I want my burger to be the cheapest, fastest, best gourmet burger in…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
