Draw You In

Just when I'd started to worry that San Francisco's art scene was stagnating, along comes an exhibition that affirms the irrepressible vitality of our artistic community. This year's SECA Art Award show feels honest and earnest and more than a…

City Lights

The vast gap between even the most sophisticated camera lens and the human eye is never more apparent than at night: Rich variations of cobalt sky collapse on film into a chalky black, detail is obliterated by shadow, and delicately…

Taking the Bait

Chris Finley's artwork has always been luridly contemporary, holding a slightly cracked mirror up to the baroque excesses of modern culture. He samples from the things that touch his life, juxtaposing the intimate with the remote in an attempt to…

The Disaffected

For centuries, young dreamers have been lured westward, abandoning their cozy colonial homes to seek fortune and adventure on the shores of the Pacific. They imagine the west as a land of inexhaustible abundance and wide-open possibilities, a reservoir for…

Double Exposure

There's not much to look at in Southern Exposure's galleries these days. To be fair, that's sort of the idea: "The Way We Work," an exhibition celebrating the nonprofit space's 30th anniversary, brings together seven collectives whose output can't be…

Outsiders In

Who are the beautiful losers? They're the kids who sneak into parking garages late at night to sail their skateboards over smooth asphalt, with a loose-limbed freedom sweetened by transgression. They're the aerosol artists who leave their mark on sleeping…

On one such blazing afternoon, to the delight of my cruel, cruel roommates, I discovered that Ocean Beach isn't that kind of beach. You know, the kind where you can actually go swimming without contracting hypothermia. And thus I learned…

"We find far more enjoyment in the combination of the noises of trams, backfiring motors, carriages and bawling crowds than in rehearsing, for example, the Eroica or the Pastoral," wrote the Italian futurist Luigi Russolo in his 1913 manifesto L'Arte…

Anxious Times

I'm not sure what I expected, really. Tear gas, flower-clogged gun muzzles, passionate speeches proposing radical resistance? Eighty thousand people marched down Market Street on Oct. 26 to protest military action in Iraq, carrying cunning signs that derided Bush, condemned…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
