Calla

At a record release party for the band's previous effort, Televise, New York's Calla played an entire set in total darkness save for a bright spotlight that shone at the audience from the rear of the stage. Consequently, all we…

Metric

I wonder what Metric (and sometimes Broken Social Scene) frontwoman Emily Haines was like in high school. Like most emerging indie rock icons, she was probably socially awkward, the only sort of pre-adult state of mind that allows for a…

The Fall

I've done some bad things in my day; I suppose all of us have. Still, I've recently been turned around, for good this time, and I owe it all to Mark E. Smith. See, in the 56 minutes it took…

Her Space Holiday

"In a dream you called me up and asked me quietly if I would like to meet you for a drink, but when I got there you just looked at me as you spoke to yourself," Marc Bianchi sings on…

Joggers

I recall fondly the thrill of arriving at a random high school house party to find a band playing. Most of the time this meant terrible songs and amateur delivery, but occasionally you'd come across a group that had an…

The American Analog Set

The American Analog Set's latest full-length, Set Free, should provide the score to some pretty quintessential autumn moments this year: the donning of new sweaters, the anticipation of kisses on the quad, first leaves falling, nostalgia for the summer's laughter…

Death Cab for Cutie

When a band like Death Cab for Cutie manages to approach gold record sales with help only from the tiny Seattle-based label Barsuk and, via Fox' s The O.C. , becomes an oft-mentioned name in a television world where the…

Mobius Band

There's an urgency missing from The Loving Sounds of Static, the debut full-length from the Brooklyn (via small-town Massachusetts) electro-pop trio Mobius Band. Gone is the immediate dose of gooey melody that made the band's City vs. Country EP such…

The White Stripes

Why Jack and Meg chose "Blue Orchid" as the first single from their latest full-length is a bit of a mystery. The song is crammed with unexciting '70s guitar riffage and even less exciting falsetto vocals, devoid of any hooks…

Gorillaz

I'll admit I was stumped when I first saw the iPod commercial featuring "Feel Good Inc.," from Gorillaz's new Demon Days. That lazy Britpop vocal sounded so familiar atop the pretty acoustic strumming, and yet I couldn't place it. Then,…

Stephen Malkmus

I don't know about you, but I got scared for a second when Stephen Malkmus released his second solo effort, Pig Lib. While that record had brief moments of whatever wizardry the former Pavement frontman would summon with his old…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
