Update Aug 12: Authorites confirmed this afternoon that Actor Robin Williams committed suicide by hanging himself with a belt. According to media reports, it was his personal assistant who discovered him clothed, in a seated position and "unresponsive with a belt secured around his neck, with the other end of the belt wedged between the clothes closet door and the door frame."

"His right shoulder area was touching the door, with his body perpendicular to the door and slightly suspended," Marin County sheriff's Lt. Keith Boyd told reporters.

Williams had recently suffered from severe depression.

Original Story Aug. 11: Actor Robin Williams was found dead in his Tiburon home at 11:55 this morning, the Marin County Sheriff tells SF Weekly.  Although the case is currently being investigated, the coroner's office says it suspects that his death was a suicide due to asphyxia.

In an eerie example of life imitating the Internet, this devastating news came one day after a now-infamous Robin Williams death hoax. We have confirmed, however, that Williams has indeed died.

A forensic exam is scheduled for tomorrow, with subsequent toxicology testing to be conducted.

Over a career spanning multiple decades, the 63 year-old actor won an Academy Award for his supporting role in Good Will Hunting, and was nominated for roles in The Fisher King, Dead Poets Society, and Good Morning, Vietnam. In later years he was known to make surprise cameos at San Francisco comedy club The Punch Line.

Williams is survived by his wife Susan Schneider, his children Zachary and Zelda Rae, and by millions of fans.

In a statement released this afternoon, Schneider writes: "This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope that the focus will be not on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."

Williams' last tweet was to his daughter on her birthday.

Oh, and he still had it:
