Medical authorities say it was 23-year-old Derrick Whitfield who was gunned down Tuesday night in the city's Potrero Hill housing projects.

Police were called out to the unit block of Turner Terrace near the Potrero Annex public housing area at about 9:!5 p.m. on Tuesday on reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Whitfield with a gunshot wound to his head.

He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he later died.

According to the Ex, Whitfield graduated from Mission High School where he stood out as a kind, funny, colorful, and intelligent student. "I loved the kid," said Principal Eric Guthertz who was Whitfield's counselor at one point. "I've been heartbroken all morning about this."

Police had not identified a suspect as of Thursday morning.
