San Francisco police arrested a 16-year-old student for allegedly showing up to school with a loaded sawed-off rifle in his backpack.

Police said that the gun was found at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Phillip & Sala Burton Academic High School, located at 400 Mansell St. in the city's Portola neighborhood.

According to police, a school staff member picked up an unattended backpack in the wellness center, and felt something odd inside the bag. When he opened it, he reportedly found the loaded weapon and ammunition.

Police were called out to the scene where they pulled the suspect out of class and questioned him over the disturbing discovery, said Officer Albie Esparza.

The teen reportedly admitted that the bag with the gun was his. The cops arrested him and booked him into juvenile hall on multiple weapons charges, Esparza said.

On Wednesday, just a mile away, ER Taylor Elementary School was placed on lockdown after a 35-year-old man was shot to death outside the school. Police identified the victim as Kyle Hayes. A suspect has not been located.
