San Francisco General Hospital staff confirmed just now that a woman's body was found this morning in an exterior stairwell on the hospital campus.
The woman has not been identified yet, and the San Francisco Sheriff's Department is leading the investigation with assistance from the San Francisco Police Department.
"We are cooperating with the investigation and will provide another update as information develops," said Rachel Kagan, spokeswoman for the hospital.
Although authorities did not confirm it was the body of Lynne Spalding, a patient at the hospital who went missing on Sept. 21, the following note was posted on the Find Lynne Facebook page a few minutes ago:
Dear friends & colleagues of Lynne Spalding. At the moment we are at SF General Hospital awaiting confirmation of some disturbing news about Lynne from the Hospital spokesperson. I will post news here as soon as we know more.
Spalding, 57, was admitted into the hospital and was being treated for an illness on Sept. 19. Hospital staff had been reportedly checking on Spalding every 15 minutes after she suffered complications from a surgery.
But on Saturday, Sept. 21, the "feisty" woman mysteriously vanished from her hospital room and has not been seen since.
David Perry, a friend of the Spalding family, told us they're still waiting to hear confirmation about whether it is her body. "Obviously, we're concerned -- we've been looking for Lynne since she went missing," Perry told us. "If this turns out to be Lynne's body in a stairwell at the hospital after they said they were concerned and instituted a search, then this is disturbing and horrifying beyond words to express."
