San Francisco police arrested the mother of 16-year-old Jaynice Johnson who collapsed and died on the sidewalk in the city's Bayview neighborhood on Sunday afternoon.
According to police, 46-year-old Heidi Heidelberg was arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment causing injury or death. She was booked into San Francisco County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
Mitchell Collins told KTVU he was was one of several witnesses who saw the teen collapse on the sidewalk near Quesada Avenue and Jennings Street about 12:45 p.m. When paramedics arrived, Johnson wasn't breathing and had a very weak pulse. They attempted to revive her, but she died at the scene, police said.
Police went to her home and concluded the girl had been abused. Police Chief Greg Suhr would not say what police found inside the girl's home; however, neighbors say family outbursts were pretty common over there.
"They brought the mom out and she was dressed with no pants on and she had her hands cuffed and she was yelling at the top of her voice," Collins told KTVU. "And they put her in the police car and took her away."
Police have not yet ruled Johnson's death a homicide, but it's certainly "suspicious." Investigators are waiting for the medical examiner to determine how Johnson died before they pursue murder charges.
