The San Francisco District Attorney's Office is slapping charges against the 39-year-old mother for child neglect and abandonment after she allegedly gave birth to her baby and left it on the street in the Bayview neighborhood.

Police told KTVU that it was determined the mother, Nneka Nash, was high on cocaine when she delivered -- and left -- her newborn earlier this week. Although the DA's Office has not yet confirmed that fact, officials said they have enough reason to charge her with one felony count of willful cruelty to a child and one misdemeanor count of failure to provide care for a child.

She will be arraigned tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., said Alex Bastian, spokesman for the DA.

On Wednesday at 2 a.m., police got a call from a worker at the Providence Baptist Church homeless shelter at 1601 McKinnon Ave., reporting a woman at their door who was "bleeding heavily."

The worker told KTVU he did not see a baby with the woman when he called police.

"She was crying and looked like she was beaten up and covered in blood," the worker told the news station. "She said she had just had a baby, but she didn't have any baby in her hands."

When the cops arrived, the mother was nowhere to be found; she had left the baby alone, according to police. Officers performed CPR on the newborn who was not breathing. They transported the baby to a local hospital where the child is recovering.

Police later located Nash, who has also been recovering at San Francisco General Hospital.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police Sgt. John Keane of the Police Department's special victims unit at 553-9363.
