A 50-year-old man was hauled to jail earlier this week on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman he met at a Sunset District bar.
Officer Carlos Manfredi says the crime took place on Sept. 21 when the woman and her boyfriend were drinking at an unidentified bar. The couple started chatting with the suspect, Martin J. Vaneycke, and learned they had similar music tastes. According to police, the woman and her boyfriend invited Vaneycke back to their place to listen to music.
As they listened to jams, both the woman and her boyfriend passed out, police said.
While the female victim was unconscious, the suspect allegedly sexually assaulted her. However, at some point during the attack, the woman regained consciousness and wrestled Vaneycke away. She screamed for help, but her boyfriend didn't wake up. She managed to throw the suspect off of her and force him to leave, police said.
She called the cops, who suspect that Vaneycke had slipped narcotics into the drinks of his new friends while they were having fun at the bar. Police believe it was the drugs that rendered them unconscious; however, toxicology tests are pending.
The SFPD Special Victims Unit utilized searched its Crime Data Warehouse database for the suspect's cell phone number. The database search uncovered a police report filed by Vaneycke that listed him as the victim of a prior crime. That information led police to
Vaneycke's residence on 39th Avenue, where he was arrested and taken into custody.
Vaneycke has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and attempted murder.
He remains in custody.
Police say it's possible that Vaneycke may be responsible for similar crimes. Anyone who may have been a victim is urged to contact the Special Victims Unit at 553-1133.
