Matt Cain's Perfect Game: Gavin Newsom's Tweet Might Have Lost Him the L.A. Vote

Well played, Gavin

Like with every big happening in the world these days, Matt Cain's perfect game -- the first in Giants history -- sent Twitter into an immediate, topic-saturating flutter. The magnitude of which we haven't seen since ... Manny Pacquiao dominated got screwed by corrupt/blind judges against Tim Bradley on Saturday.

Of course it wouldn't be a true Tweevent without participation from Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom himself -- the man named "America's Most Social Mayor" in 2010 --  who, in his last year as San Francisco's mayor, had more Twitter followers (1.4 million) than even Newark's Cory Booker (1.1 million). The New York Times dubbed him "the Twitter Prince" before gushing, "If only the Twitterverse had polling places. Forget this lieutenant governor business -- @gavinnewsom could run for president."

So at 10:17 p.m. yesterday, several minutes after Joaquin Arias zipped that sweet final out to Brandon Belt, @gavinnewsom tweeted: "No matter who your team is, all CA celebrating #MattCain tonite! First perfecto in #Giants history!"

Apparently, the lite gov doesn't know any Dodger fans.

On second thought, this is a guy who played two years of college baseball on a partial scholarship at Santa Clara University. And you can be damn sure you'd see Newsom braid his Armani-cologne-ad hair into cornrows before you'd see him tweet, "No matter who your team is, all CA celebrating #ChadBillingsley tonite! Second perfecto in #Dodgers history!"

So perhaps this was no mishap (Twithap?) born of ignorance or disorienting and careless joy. Perhaps this was just the San Franciscan in him.

Did he lose a chunk of the Los Angeles vote? Will they remember this when he's running for California governor? Probably, and definitely.

But really, there's no better time than the night of a Matt Cain perfect game to flip a Giant social media middle finger at our blue and white counterparts down the coast.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
