That's the thing about crime: It's not supposed to be even a little funny.
Sadly, we couldn't help but chuckle at this criminal who apparently just wasn't savvy enough to steal a Hybrid taxi cab in the Richmond District.
According to police reports, a cab driver was flagged down at about 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of 18th Avenue and Geary Bouelvard. The suspect told the cabbie to take him to the other side of Golden Gate Park.
As they entered the park at Arguello and Fulton, the passenger took out a gun and told the cab driver to pull over. He demanded all his money and then ordered the cabbie to get out of the car. The fare also took the driver's watch.
Sounds like a tragically normal robbery, right?
The suspect told the driver to walk away, but as he was walking, the robber called the victim back and asked him to help him start the engine of the cab, which was one of those eco-friendly and super-confusing Hybrids.
When the cabbie informed the wannabe car thief that the engine was in fact already running, the chagrined suspect told him to leave again. The victim ran off and called police.
But when officers arrived to the crime scene, they found the Hybrid taxi still sitting in the exact same spot, unattended, and no suspect in sight.
All we can tell you at this point is that the suspect was described as a white male,
between 40 and 50 years old. He was about 6-foot-1, and weighs roughly 160 pounds. He was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt, and is a perfect candidate for dumbcrooks.com.
