Warning: this will probably cause some bruised feelings. Maybe even a case of Facebook depression.
Ever curious about who decided you weren't worth the hassle on Facebook? For those willing to spend a few minutes, you can quickly see just who among your old Facebook pals has unfriended you.
Think you're strong enough to know? We thought so too, and then we actually looked and have been listening to the Smiths nonstop ever since. (Which, thanks to Facebook's new overeager sharing mechanisms, has no doubt been broadcast to all of our Facebook friends, thus leading to more people unfriending us. It's a vicious cycle.)
Instructions after the jump.
1. Enable the new Facebook Timeline.
This will take one second, and require you to pretend that you are a developer. TechCrunch has a good demo, as does Huffington Post, or you can follow along below. Essentially, you'll be setting yourself up as a Facebook app developer in order to get a sneak peek at the new Timeline feature. Trust us: it's not nearly as scary as it sounds. Check out the video below:
2. Click to a year in your new timeline.
Scroll down, past the pictures and status updates, until you reach the box in the left column labeled "Friends." You'll be able to see the number of new friends you made in any given year. There may still be some kinks Facebook needs to work out here, because either we successfully wiped 2009 from our memory or we really only made two friends during that time.
3. See who your "friends" are.
This is the moment of truth, and we'd be lying if we said our stomachs didn't drop when we saw that What's-His-Face and Who? unfriended us. The "Friends" box lets you bring up a list of everyone you added that year, and if the "Add Friend" option appears next to the name, that means either you were a cold snake or someone else was. And you know which category you fall into. What's up, Dylan? Thought we were cool?
4. Go on an unfriending rampage. (optional)
Everyone should get a taste of what it feels like to be rejected. So, make sure they get theirs, and then complain to your remaining friends about how you hate the new Facebook. You'll fit right in.
UPDATE: Looks like Facebook has closed up the loophole. Friends you made back in the day but are friends with no longer have been removed from the list. Sorry, everyone!
