The U.S. Coast Guard has called off the search for a 53-year-old man who jumped from his sinking ship near the San Francisco coast this weekend after the life jacket he had been wearing washed up on Ocean Beach early this morning.
The boater is presumed dead.
The U.S. Coast Guard was called to the area off Ocean Beach over the weekend after getting alerts of a distressed boat that was sinking. The two men aboard the 47-foot stern trawler jumped from the ship, one in a life jacket and one in a life ring, according to media reports.
Coast Guard officers spotted the man in a life ring and brought him back to shore safely. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia and shock.
Rescue teams continued scouring 44 square miles of ocean for more than eight hours, looking for the second boater. But the Coast Guard called off the search just after midnight Monday morning after police found the man's life jacket on Ocean Beach.
He has not yet been identified.
