Medical authorities have identified the man whose body washed up on the shores of Fort Mason last week as 64-year-old Mehdi Almotahari.
A visitor at Fort Mason spotted Almotahari's body floating in the water at about 4:45 p.m. on March 8. Medical authorities had trouble locating his family, but were able to get in touch with the man's brother this morning.
Almotahari was a resident of Marina, a city of 25,000 in Monterey County. The National Park Service is handling the investigation, since Fort Mason is part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area.
Alexandra Picavet, spokeswoman with the park service, wouldn't say whether the death has been deemed suspicious. She would only say that the agency is still investigating the circumstances.
"We handle all unwitnessed deaths in the same manner," she said. "The investigation is ongoing."
