Wednesday's fire is the second in the area in recent days, after a Sunday morning fire at 550 Leavenworth. Today, firefighters had the situation under control before 8 a.m., but 824 Hyde -- a four-story, eight-unit building -- has been "completely destroyed."
AlertSF (via SFAppeal) reports that "50-100" people have been evacuated from the building, with 35 sent to the lobby of St. Francis Hospital. That's an awful lot of people for eight apartment units; we'll update when and if we hear more. ABC put the figure at "at least 27."
The "cause of the fire remains unknown, but firefighters believe it started on the first floor and then spread." The rumors of arson are coming from police performing crowd control, who told onlookers the whole deal is suspicious, reported Tenderblog. Streets are closed off in the area and Muni is being rerouted, so if your commute through the Nob Hill/TL area sucked, that might be why.
