Unfortunately, Obama's biggest gay fans are too wrapped up in the delusional hope that being practical and patient will pay off for them someday. He constantly baits the LGBT community with words of love and yet his actions do not match the words. These besotted fools need to pull their complicit heads out of their asses and heed the numerous examples in American history that tell us what we can expect (nothing) when politicians are allowed to exercise their own timetables on matters of social justice.Tuesday in Washington, D.C., six military activists were arrested after handcuffing themselves to the fence outside the White House. Two of the activists, Dan Choi and Jim Pietrangelo, were arrested a month ago for participating in a similar demonstration. Yesterday Autumn Sandeen, Evelyn Thomas, Mara Boyd, and Larry Whitt joined Choi and Pietrangelo for a repeat performance. The group that organized the demonstration, Get Equal, claims that Tuesday's action represents all military branches in which women, men, and transgendered people of many races have grown impatient with waiting for Obama to act on his promise to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT), the legislation that bans open gays from serving in the military.
The activists were held in jail overnight. Of particular interest in this action is the participation of Sandeen, a transgendered woman as well as a veteran. Transgendered individuals are often the targets of poor treatment by unsympathetic police departments. She is a featured writer at Pam's House Blend and wrote an essay that was posted at PHB following her arrest. Sandeen really put her ass on the line for this issue -- as did Choi and Pietrangelo - both of whom were arrested only one month ago and could face stiffer sentences this time around.
The night before this demonstration in D.C., other activists from Get Equal interrupted President Obama during a speech in Los Angeles where he was raising funds in support of California Senator Barbara Boxer's re-election. The activists shouted at the president demanding he deliver on his repeal statements. The president was visibly displeased with the disruption as were many of his supporters.
In an attempt to quell the outburst during his speech, Obama said, "When you've got an ally like Barbara Boxer and you've got an ally like me who are standing for the same thing, then you don't know exactly why you have to holler because we already hear you. It would make more sense to holler at the people who oppose it."
I thought he said HE was going to work to repeal DADT in his State of the Union address. That last statement sounds to me like this is our problem to solve and we should wait patiently with checkbooks open to support him and his party while they get around to a repeal. Too many people are willing to be patient no matter how many times the promises are repeated and never realized.
Patience doesn't work. It never has. Read a fucking book about the suffragist movement. Women would never have been granted the vote if they just sat back and waited for their paternalistic leaders to decide when it should happen. In fact, suffrage almost didn't happen even though it was raised in Congress dozens of times over the course of decades...multiple decades.
Patience didn't help women obtain the right to vote. Impatience did.
Patrick Connors is an uppity fag that thinks it's time to get arrested. Again.
