Private security guards in San Francisco's financial district are striking all this week. They want a boost in pay for their sucky, $24,000 a year jobs and access to affordable health care. The SEIU Local 247 told ABC,
"Right now security officers even though they work full time protecting these multi-billion dollar properties, they only earn about $24,000 dollars a year, that's less than half of what it takes for a family to make it in the Bay Area and they don't have access to affordable health care," said Gina Bowers from SEIU Local 24/7.
Building owners told the press the two sides haven't even begun negotiating pay and benefits yet.
Labor radio says the security guards make make on average ...
$11.30 per hour while their janitorial counterparts earn on average $11.49 per hour. Mayor Newsom said he was "troubled" by the fact that only four negotiation sessions had been held so far -- even though the security guards' contract had expired on June 30, CBS says.
Personally, this seems like union bullshit. I mean, why should being a security guard automatically qualify you for $50K and full bennies? It takes no education or skill to sit on your ass all day, occasionally rising to hassle a skateboarder. Go to school if you want more money. Fuck, read a book while you man that booth.
Don't get me wrong. I'm all for unions. Children working in factories should make at least minimum wage. People who fall in vats of sulfuric acid have a right to worker's compensation until they recover and become the arch villain Joker.
But, overall, the American union has gone over the hump and everyone knows it. Incompetence, corruption and nepotism gets rewarded, and you can't fire anybody (Muni)! You want more money? Go out and fucking make it.
Top Five Ways for Security Guards to Make Some Extra Dough:
--Curtail the purchase of ringtones during hours of boredom on job.
--Offer to film skateboarders you normally chase away.
--Answer outsourced service calls bound for Bombay.
--Stop buying, start growing weed smoked before shift.
--Host Fight Club in that abandoned depot you guard.
