Alcoholic beverage lines seems to be a popular trend amongst rappers. E-40 has already released a few liquor brands (Earl Stevens Collection wines, Slurricane, and E-40 malt liquor), while P. Diddy has Ciroc vodka and DeLeón Tequila and Nicki Minaj has Myx Fusions Moscato.

Now Drake is set to become the latest rapper to unleash his own booze line. In an Instagram post last month, the rapper shared a picture of the logo for his new whiskey brand, Virginia Black, with the caption: "After that legendary moment what else is there to do but celebrate with class. Virginia Black coming soon..."

Kamaiyah, the 21-year-old Oakland rapper behind 2015's fiscally-focused banger, "How Does It Feel," dropped her debut mixtape A Good Night in the Ghetto today. The 16-track project features ratchet rapper YG and Oakland R&B singer Netta Brielle and is heavily produced by local Bay Area producers, such as P-Lo, 1-O.A.K., and Drew Banga. The songs range from slow, piano-laced ballads, like in "Break You Down," to buzzy, synth-heavy party anthems, like "Fuck It Up."

D.M.V. Rapper GoldLink Speaks the Truth

Posted By on Mon, Feb 29, 2016 at 10:14 AM

goldlink-jabari-jacobs.jpg

It’s easy to miss lyrics in a GoldLink song, given the 22-year-old’s quick vocal pace. Listen closely though, and you’ll catch something.

Hate my uncle on my mama side, we started beefin' / Kicked me out house, yeah I was homeless, wasn't eatin', he raps on the opener to his 2015 debut, And After That, We Didn’t Talk.

Artists have been assuming hard-luck personas for the benefit of songs since the beginning of music. In this case, Goldlink — performing at Social Hall on Tuesday, March 1 — isn’t spitting fabrications; he’s just recounting his past.

West Oakland rapper Beejus (born Brandon Robinson) unveils his eighth album, Beesmoove 2, today on All Shook Down (available for download on Sunday, Feb. 28). The 12-track project, produced almost entirely by Beejus’ friend and fellow West Oakland native Oops, includes a myriad of chill, laid back raps over a selection of stark, bass-heavy beats, as well as features by local rappers K.E.L.L.S., J. Lately, and Erk Tha Jerk.

“If I’m going to work and put in effort to get shit done, I’d rather just do it with the people that I’m cool with,” Beejus said in a recent interview. “There’s no point in being selfish and taking it all for myself.”

Fresh after playing a private, corporate show in Keystone, Colorado for the clothing brand Zumiez, Long Beach rapper Vince Staples hopped on the phone with SF Weekly to answer a few questions. The 22-year-old dropped his critically-acclaimed debut album, Summertime '06, in the summer of 2015, and we chatted with him about the fame he's received since its release, as well as his music-making process in general.

On why he named his debut album after the summer of 2006:
It was just a really important time. There was a shifting in culture. Anyone who knows my specific area (Los Angeles, in general) can kind of speak to it. Things started to change culturally. And when you do your first album, it’s kind of a turning point in your life and you're thinking about how you can relate that to your life and music. I wanted to focus on one thing and I felt like that would be the best thing to focus on.

Antwon dropped a video for "JACUZZI" today ahead of his new EP Double Ecstasy, which is due out later this fall.

The rapper, originally out of San Jose, has strong ties to the Bay Area punk community he grew up in, which explains why the press release for the new video included references to Infest and power-violence. Now based in L.A., the rapper can be seen in the video chilling in Long Beach, wearing a Nothing shirt, and chatting simultaneously on two cellphones.
