Six Notable Acts From Outside Lands 2016

This year's Outside Lands was about as memorable and successful as one could ask for. In between the fancy, albeit ridiculous food stands — think ramen burgers and donut burgers — there were standout performances from Radiohead and LCD Soundsystem, as well as a bizarre trend among some of the musicians, like Miike Snow and Miguel, to dress in all white. There was also that pop-up show from Griz that resulted in a mass mosh-pit and (literally) dozens of people getting pickpocketed. Not cool, bro.

If you didn't make it to Golden Gate to partake in the festivities — or get your wallet stolen — we've rounded up six of the most notable acts for your perusal. Check it out and remember, if you're feeling bummed about missing out, there's always next year.

So you don't have a ticket to Outside Lands and you feel kind of bummed because seemingly all of your friends do and they can't stop gabbing about how stoked they are to see Radiohead and J.Cole. You're a bit jealous, but hey, don't worry, braddah. There are so many other shows going on this weekend that you can go to and then brag about to your friends later.

What to Drink with Your Favorite Outside Lands Artists

Posted By on Wed, Aug 3, 2016 at 12:23 PM

We’re looking forward to spending a few summer nights with this year’s Outside Lands headliners. It’s a beautiful daydream: Picnic blankets strewn around Golden Gate Park, music whistling in your ears, people laughing and eating, a relaxing drink in hand.

Which got us wondering, naturally: What should we be drinking at the event? We know which wines to pair with the artisan Raclette cheeses from Cheese Lands, which beers to wash down the garlic fries from the Taste of the Bay Area food vendors. But which wine complements the soothing vocals of Lionel Richie? What beer matches the desperate wail of “Creep?”

Who Needs Coachella When You Can Go To Outside Lands Instead? Peep This Year's Lineup To See Why

It's likely that more than a few San Franciscan's have (or will be) flipping a shit once they see who's on Outside Lands' 2016 lineup. Because, seriously, it's that good.

Perhaps the best part about the lineup is the eclecticism of it. Everyone from Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, Sufjan Stevens, Halsey, and Beach House to Chance The Rapper, J. Cole, Big Grams, Miike Snow, Peaches, The Last Shadow Puppets will be playing. (Also worth mentioning: Duran Duran, Major Lazer, Air, Lana Del Rey, Miguel, Ibeyi, Vince Staples, Kamasi Washington, and the list goes on.)

Even the newsroom here at SF Weekly is pumped about this lineup. Says our arts and culture editor Peter Kane, "I'm gonna go ahead and say this is the best Outside Lands lineup ever." Ditto, Peter.

Tickets for the ninth-annual Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, hosted at Golden Gate Park from August 5 to 7, go on sale today. The only problem is the ticket prices are steeeeeeeep — which is saying a lot given that the only tickets available right now are the discounted early bird passes (or, as they call it, eager beaver passes). For $325 (not including the extra $39.95 fee that's also tacked on), you can get a regular admission three day pass — VIP three day passes go for a whopping $715.

Elton John Is Still Standing

“Shut Up and Play the Hits” isn’t just a documentary about LCD Soundsystem’s farewell concert. It’s also a great mantra for headliners playing a music festival when their last no. 1 record charted before the median attendee was born.

Commanding the Lands End stage as Outside Lands’ final performer, Elton John played a higher hits-to-everything-else ratio than even Paul McCartney did in 2013. He opened with “The Bitch Is Back” and “Bennie and the Jets,” and launched into a nice, unbroken string of ’70s favorites: “Tiny Dancer,” “Daniel,” “Philadelphia Freedom,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and “Rocket Man,” while the latter half of the just-under-two-hour set leaned harder on the ’80s, with “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues,” “Sad Songs (Say So Much),” and “I’m Still Standing.” There was no surprise guest George Michael on “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” sadly.

The eighth edition of Outside Lands has come and gone, leaving thousands of music fans with sore calves and dusty shoes from tromping around Golden Gate Park for the past three days. There were a number of significant changes to this year's festival, including the shuffling of venue locations and the introduction of RFID-enabled wristbands that replaced paper tickets. Here's a look at what worked and what didn't.

Start weaving those whimsical flower crowns now, kiddos: Festival season is officially upon us.

We don't make this proclamation lightly. For one, we've started receiving press releases tailored around festival fashion, as well as pitches about new ways for ladies to relieve themselves whilst enjoying music out of doors. But more importantly, like the first robin of spring — nevermind that San Francisco didn't actually get a winter this year — Another Planet Entertainment has officially delivered the lineup for this year's Outside Lands, which will run Aug. 7 through 9 in Golden Gate Park. (Full lineup both here and below.)

If Wayne Coyne could spend time in a bubble... - CHRISTOPHER VICTORIO

  • If Wayne Coyne could spend time in a bubble...

After three days all one can really say is "How much dust can build up in a pair of thigh-highs?" to which the answer is, "All of it." With that in mind, let's turn a sated, weary eye one last time to the events of Outside Lands and recall the highs and lows of Day 3.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
