Nine Notable Acts from Coachella Weekend One

I’ve covered Pitchfork, Bonnaroo, and South by Southwest — and of course, Noise Pop, Outside Lands, and Treasure Island — but until this weekend I’d never been to Coachella. In a lot of ways, it’s just like all the others, with Heineken wristbands, fringed leather, and not-especially-surreptitious MDMA consumption. But owing to Indio’s proximity to L.A., the surprise guests are many and the fashionistas are legion.

It was luxurious to sweat profusely after remembering that I didn’t take my winter jacket off once at Outside Lands 2013, but some people there wore furs all the same. While there were many lovely moments — from Bernie Sanders introducing Run the Jewels to The Arcs’ baffling surprise guest (Joe Walsh from The Eagles) to rumors that the organizers plan to stage a dad-baiting mega-concert in October with The Who, Bob Dylan, Roger Waters, and other septuagenarians you might not have many more chances to see — here are our picks for the most notable acts of Weekend One.

Big day for lineup announcements, huh?

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which will again span two weekends this spring (April 10-12 and April 17-19) in Indio, announced its lineup today.

As usual, it's a behemoth of a list, which is probably best perused on the flyer below. Headliners include Jack White, Drake, and AC/DC; non-headliners we're excited about include Azealia Banks, Raekwon and Ghostface, Tyler the Creator, FKA Twigs, Father John Misty, Mac DeMarco, Run the Jewels, the War on Drugs, Perfume Genius, Angel Olsen, St. Vincent, Panda Bear, Charles Bradley, locals Tycho, Toro y Moi, and Lil B, and a couple of reunions: seminal San Diego punks Drive Like Jehu and British shoegazers Ride.

Top 10 Best Fashion Moments on the S.S. Coachella

Most of the people we met on the S.S. Coachella had never been on a cruise before. Like us, they weren't so sure what to pack or how to dress for three days of awkwardly saying hi to their favorite bands at a floating city on the sea. But, like the festival, the fans also brought their desert style to cruisin' with mixed results.

We could sit here and talk about all the "types" of people who sailed out to Nassau, but really, we'd rather just show you. These are the most memorable fashion moments we caught on the maiden voyage of the S.S. Coachella. Get your eyebrows ready to raise.

S.S. Coachella: We Go Wine-Tasting with James Murphy on a Cruise Ship

[Editor's note: As you've probably heard, massive So-Cal music festival Coachella is going on its first cruise this winter, featuring Pulp, James Murphy, and Sleigh Bells, among other acts. Liz Tracy, music editor of our sister paper in Broward County, Fl., is aboard the S.S. Coachella , so we'll be publishing her dispatches from the floating music festival all this week.]

Old punk guys and fancy wines: Two things that make sense together only now, mere days before the end of the world.

Nothing is more a "sign of the times" than James Murphy and Justin Chearno hosting a winetasting in the middle of the ocean for a handful of people both able and willing to ride the S.S. Coachella. It has all the elements of things we want as a culture: exclusivity, intimacy, rock stars, and, of course, alcohol. The two-evening Real Wine talk really captured the oddity of the experience, in a more wholesome way than two people discreetly doing it in the Sky Lounge to a live soundtrack of Cloud Nothings.

No one's really interested in reading about the actual performances taking place on this musical ship of contradictions, the S.S. Coachella, amirite? Instead, you want a spoonful of gossipy anecdotal sugar, straight from the decks of this odd ship.

As you might have seen, Pulp was the largest name at the top of the S.S. Coachella flyer. The band played almost two hours on Sunday night, making cruisers swoon with Anglophilic adoration. But Jarvis Cocker -- the man whose name was being whispered all around the ship -- didn't sit in his room or hide out like James Murphy (the chupacabra of the boat, whom I have only spotted offstage).

Fashion and music are the funniest-looking twin sisters. They're always together, always kinda sloppy. Sometimes they dress up like a swan or wear a big mouse head. Together, they're always looking to make a bold statement.

If you follow Sleigh Bells' Alexis Krauss on Instagram (@KraussingAround), you know what she's trying to say through fashion these days: It's all about your your nails, girl.

Krauss has taken her love of nails a bit further than the normal rock star. She even invited Ria Lopez, her 24-year-old manicurist, aboard the S.S. Coachella.

Top Five Reasons Outside Lands Is Better Than Coachella

Coachella 2012 has come and gone; now it's time to brag about our awesome tans and how we lost count of all of the onstage mindfucks. But while we Nor-Cal-ers try to switch our brains back to reality, let us also explain why we're really looking forward to Outside Lands, San Francisco's own major music festival.

5. It's cheaper

Before taxes, the face value for a three-day pass for Coachella was $320. (As the previous link demonstrates, they were going for significantly cheaper -- $238 -- in the days before the final weekend.) Meanwhile, three-day general admission tickets for Outside Lands started out at $195 and now cost $225. That's still less than the savviest Coachella-goer could have paid. And Explosions in the Sky, Santigold, Justice and Andrew Bird are just a few of the Coachella alumni who will be performing at the S.F. festival this August.

Best of Coachella Weekend Two: Sunday, April 22

By the third day of Coachella's second weekend -- the sixth and final day of this year's festival -- folks had more or less learned to ignore the dust and the heat. Here are our intrepid writers' favorite things about the final hours of the 2012 event.

Fucking Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre

Yeah, the show was exactly the same as last week's, down to the banter. But damn if we wouldn't watch that performance every Sunday night for the rest of the year, craptastic hologram and all. Perhaps most impressive was the lack of a backing track; even awkward, clunky old Dr. Dre was performing all of his rhymes live without a net. The cameos were plenty, and everyone made their songs count, from Wiz Khalifia to an undernourished Kurupt to a dreamy-and-shirtless 50 Cent to Eminem, who in his capri pants looked about as masculine as our baby yoga instructor. It was two decades of G-funk hits, surrounded by your best underdressed homies in the desert; call it the most fun you can have with your clothes off. -Ben Westhoff

The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
