While some DJs sort their records by BPM or genre, Bay Area DJ Jason Greer prefers to organize his collection by names of psychedelic substances, like mushrooms or LSD. His musical career began in his hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana, and has taken him to Texas, New York, Los Angeles, and finally, San Francisco, where's he's resided since 1997. As a well-known figure in the current underground scene, he is part of the Bionic crew and a staple at after-hours parties. We spoke with Jason about Bionic, the local underground party scene, and his most treasured record find. He plays Friday at Underground SF with Mozhgan for their We Are Monsters project.
How did you become part of the Bionic SF crew?
Nikola and Solar asked me to join about two years ago when they started it back up at 222. I was stoked. I guess they thought I would be a good addition.
What something about you guys we should know?
We all have great record collections and are excellent at selecting. And we all bring something different to the table and somehow tie it together. Oh, and we love tacos.
You guys brought back your party this year to Underground SF after 222 shuttered. Do you think a small piece of SF nightlife closed with that club?
Oh yes. I mean 222 was a big part of SF night life. Hats off. It was sad to see it come to an end. But SF Underground has picked up where 222 left off, thank God.
Do you wish there were more clubs like Underground SF?
No, there is only one Underground SF. You can't replicate it. It's something special. That location has so much history, and is special to me because it's where I landed my first residency way back in the late '90s when it was called The Top.
What are some unique things about our local underground scene?
What's so great about SF is there is so many talented artists, promoters and DJ's, especially for how small this city really is. It seems like there's an underground every weekend both nights these days. I love it.
What's something you would change if you could?
If I could change anything, it would be for clubs to stay open to 4 a.m. at least. Things don't really start popping until midnight, then all of sudden it's last call, lights are on, and the party is over. Then everyone is scrambling trying to figure out where the underground is or whose house is the after party. Just keep them in the clubs!
What's your favorite type of party to play?
My love of playing outdoors under the stars.
Who has been the most memorable artist you've opened up for?
I opened for Terry Francis at an underground in L.A. called JACK. It was amazing! I played from 1 a.m. until about 4:30 a.m., and he came after me and played until almost 8 in the morning. The only bummer is the sound guy fucked up and it didn't get recorded. I was gutted.
You're known for your record-hunting skills. What are some of your favorite local places to dig?
Vinyl Dreams and Amoeba, and Juno, Discogs, Picadilly Records, and Beatport online.
What has been your most treasured find?
Monoton-Monotonprodukt 07 on vinyl.
Tell us a little about We Are Monsters, your project playing this Friday at Underground.
We Are Monsters is a party Mozhgan and I started a couple years ago as a monthly at 222. We both had an idea of the kind of music that we wanted to play and book. It can be anything from Italo disco, dark wave, post industrial, spaced-out house, Robitussin disco, and my new favorite name for a genre that Mike Bee from Vinyl Dreams came up with, drug chug. After 222 closed, we have done few at Monarch and an underground in LA. And this Friday we will be doing it at Bionic.
