What do you think is integral in capturing the feeling of an underground party in a not-so-underground venue?
To me, the most important part is to be active in the lives of your staff and your dancers: go out to the all the bars, events, and drag shows you can. Be there and tell people about your party in person. Eat food with people. Teach them to DJ and spend time with them. Make sure you let them know how much you love them and mean it! That is the heart and soul of a party.
Who has been your favorite guest at Odyssey so far?
I've had my mind blown by some absolutely thrilling and amazing guests, including David Harness, Sunshine Jones, DJ Garth, and Andy Riley, from the UK. However, Stanley Frank of Viennetta Discotheque is my pick. He can make a peaking party space feel like your living room, and continues to push my boundaries musically. I feel blessed to live in a city with people who work so hard for music, fashion and art.
What type of artists do you usually book?
There are many things I'm looking for in DJs. Tireless ambition to find new and compelling sounds, with the knowledge to find the hidden bridges that connect the past to the present. Great personal energy and ability to connect with the dancefloor. Continued relevance in gay and straight communities. Last but not least, it's very important that the DJ has a musical vision that is bigger than any one genre or category, and has more to say than 'I'm good at my craft.'
How do manage to keep up the positive energy at each party?
Honestly it's very hard to hold in the good energy! At some point, everyone started showing up with amazing energy at the door. The right people were there, being fabulous and beautiful and free, and they have been making the party amazing. The staff is totally dedicated and is more like a family now. To throw this party is an incredibly overwhelming experience -- I get a huge thrill from it, and feel inspired and wonderful for days afterwards.
During which song are we certain to find you on the dancefloor this Friday?
Anyone who knows me well knows I have a huge soft spot for "Promised Land" by Joe Smooth. I believe that we can walk hand-in-hand on this Earth -- and when we dance together, we are one step closer.
